Search Engine Internet Marketing Optimization ? Do You Really Need ...

Search Engine Internet Marketing Optimization ? The term, though seeming terribly technical, is often held up as bait for you to bite on. The consultants won?t get you to pay them large sums of money if the image of total failure isn?t brought into your mind at the thought of not employing these people.

The question is: what is search engine optimization and what has it got to do with marketing and, in particular, internet marketing?

Do you need it?

I get asked this often.

The other day, I attended a seminar and heard a consultant telling the mostly newbie crowd of internet entrepreneurs that it takes years and thousands of dollars to get one of your pages on the top ten of a search. If your page is not on the top 20, you are dead and that is true. On the other hand, using vehicles like the EzineArticles that you are reading right now, you and your expertise can be on the front page for FREE within sometimes days.

You want your site or name in the top ten because:

  1. 95% of searchers will click on one of the top 10 sites. If you are not there, you are doomed. 99 out of a 100 sites on the web right now will be dark a year from now only to be replaced by another batch of hopefuls following the advice of ?experts?.
  2. If you consider your site page to be a teenager in high school looking to be noticed for the prom, you could liken search engine optimization (or seo) as the perfect clothes, perfect haircut, the right posture and so forth that the high school person would put forward when trolling for a date (internet marketing).
  3. Search engine internet marketing optimization involves getting noticed by the search engines. They are looking for quality, relevant content on your site. If someone types in a search for acne cures, they don?t want to see the top ten page full of tomato disease, dog training and making cement at home sites. They want all 10 to be relevant to acne, acne treatments, acne cures and anything else to do with acne.
  4. If they typed in ?natural acne cures?, then a whole new set of highly relevant results would be displayed.

How can the search engines detect what is on your site and the quality of it? They have hundreds of criteria that they use to judge your site. They greatly affect your internet marketing activities. To name a few:

1. Where did your visitor come from?
2. How long did they stay?
3. Did they break the sound barrier smashing down on the back button within seconds (called the bounce rate) of arriving or did they read your material, perhaps go to several pages and then click through one of your links to a product you sell (they have found their solution therefor your site is highly relevant).
4. How many other quality sites are linked in to yours? Links are signs of popularity and the guru?s will try to convince you of the complexity of doing this. They will mention something called DMOZ (do a Google search and find out for yourself what it is). About 80% of the applying sites are rejected. It is nice to have them on your side but life will go on without their blessing. And, who knows, you might be one of the accepted 20%
5. There are many other things the search engine spiders (little bits of code) look for as they ?crawl? your site. The search engines have many rocket scientists working on their search algorithms and they are getting better all the time.

The experts will give you dire warnings of losing your fortune with:

* PPC (Pay Per Click)
* PPA (Pay Per Activity)
* Keyword density
* Op-ins
* Squeeze pages
* Creating your own ezine (or not)
* My God, how will you get paid for your internet marketing? (PayPal and ClickBank are highly secure and virtually free)
* and so on.

All of this information, how to use it, build sites and so forth is available free on the internet. Go slow and work hard. It will take time. Anyone can do it.

The internet is truly the river of gold. The problem is that most people show up on its shore with a little thimble to timidly dip out some gold. I urge you to show up with a fleet of tanker trucks (the river doesn?t care).

In conclusion, you really do not need a consultant to prosper in internet marketing. The biggest reason of all is that once they get into your site, they will add all kinds of pretty features and pictures. What happens is that all that fine print on the contract you signed comes into effect. Almost everything on your site becomes their intellectual property If the day comes that you want to fire them, you will suddenly realize that your business is not really your business. Copy right laws protect them. You have lost all control. You do not need these people
