Mitt Romney remains a solid favorite in the state, though, doubling Perry's support with 36 percent of the vote. That's a slight dip for Romney, who was at 42 percent in NH Journal's June survey.

Ron Paul is in third place with 14 percent, followed by Michele Bachmann at 10 percent?? the same level of support she clocked in the June poll.

The poll ? which was taken August 15 and 16, in the wake of Perry's announcement ? suggests that the newly declared candidate could gain a real toehold in the only Northeastern early primary state. But it also indicates that Romney will be tough to dislodge in New Hampshire, where his favorability rating stands at 66 percent among GOP primary voters.

If Perry performs well in Iowa, he probably wouldn't need to beat Romney in New Hampshire, only stay competitive enough to take their face-off to South Carolina and then head into Florida with momentum.

The rest of the GOP field is spinning its wheels. Jon Huntsman, who has staked his presidential campaign on a strong New Hampshire showing, is tied with Herman Cain at 3 percent. Newt Gingrich is at 2 percent and Rick Santorum is at 1 percent.

NH Journal is a venture launched by several New Hampshire political strategists, including Perry adviser Dave Carney, who sits on the advisory board of the website.
