Colm Moloney: ?That?s correct. We identified a gap in the market for archaeological research. While there are a number of well-established genealogical companies out there who trace ?people,? nobody offered professional archaeological research of ?places.?? Our market research indicated that there was a substantial body of people out there that wanted to find out about the places in which they lived or, indeed, their ancestral home.

Moloney: ?While genealogists will trace your ancestors, Know Thy Place Ltd. will research the place that your ancestors lived ? taking your story back potentially thousands of years beyond any written records. We feel this compliments genealogical research and to truly discover your (Irish) roots, we feel it is essential to look at ?place? as well as ?people.?

TheWildGeese.com:? Did you learn information about your own ancestral home?

Moloney: ?I have taken my home place (Midleton in County Cork) back to the Bronze Age. My maternal family (O?Neils) lived here from at least the late 18^thcentury. I have traced my paternal line back to a small holding in Clogheen near Monasterevin in County Kildare in the early 19^thcentury, but the surname Moloney is almost certainly from County Clare so I have some work there just yet. It?s all very exciting and all my siblings are getting involved!

TheWildGeese.com:? How did your initial clients learn about your work?

Moloney: ?We initially prepared a chart for George Hook, a famous TV and radio presenter in Ireland. I presented his chart to him on his radio show, and the orders immediately started coming in. Since then we have concentrated on social media as we are really trying to tap into the Irish Diaspora worldwide.

TheWildGeese.com:? What is your archaeology background?

Moloney: ?I wanted to be an archaeologist for as long as I can remember. I studied archaeology at University College Cork in Ireland where I got a BA in Archaeological and Greek and Roman Civilization and later gained an MA in Archaeology and Heritage Management from the University of Leicester in the UK. I have worked as a professional archaeologist in the UK and Ireland for the last 24 years and have published the results of my work in both jurisdictions in a selection of academic and popular publications. In addition, I have managed large commercial archeological companies in both the UK and Ireland since 1997 ? I currently part-own Rubicon Heritage Services, where I am the managing director. This is the largest provider of commercial archaeological services to the development sector in Ireland. This organization provides support to Know Thy Place Ltd., which I also part own and manage.

CHICAGO (AP) ? A nephew of Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade was one of 13 men shot ? two fatally ? during a violent six-hour stretch in Chicago, another indication that violence is on the rise in the nation's third-largest city.

A spokesperson for Wade confirmed that his nephew was one of those injured in a Thursday shooting at a convenience store. The spokesperson declined to confirm the nephew's name or condition.

Wade, a Chicago native, was playing with the Heat at Toronto on Friday night. In a statement prepared for release before the game, Wade says he does not have all the details, but that his "thoughts and prayers are with all involved."

The shootings are part of a larger uptick in violence across Chicago this year.

In fact, the power of sunspots seen in UV photographs to motivate sun-guarding behaviors such as avoiding tanning beds, staying out of the midday sun, proper sunscreen use and the use of protective clothing has been known from previous studies.

?But while the photographs make an impression, not much has been known about what the spots in the photographs actually mean,? Gamble says. The group is the first to show that the amount of sun damage shown in ultraviolet photographs is correlated with other melanoma risk factors, such as skin color, hair color, eye color and freckles.

?For these children at increased risk, it is even more important to protect themselves from the sun and ultraviolet radiation, ? Gamble says.

With UV photographs used to create greater awareness of melanoma and motivate increased use of sun prevention in the high-risk population, ?much of the occurrence of the disease and its complications can be prevented,? Gamble says.

This study was funded by a $40,000 seed grant from the University of Colorado Cancer Center.

Scientists at the University of Guelph have found a way to successfully clone American elm trees that have survived repeated epidemics of their biggest killer Dutch elm disease.

The breakthrough, published today in the Canadian Journal of Forest Research, is the first known use of in vitro culture technology to clone buds of mature American elm trees.

"This research has the potential to bring back the beloved American elm population to North America," said Prof. Praveen Saxena, a plant scientist who worked on the project with Professor Alan Sullivan. Both are from Guelph's Department of Plant Agriculture.

"It may also serve as a model to help propagate and preserve thousands of other endangered plant species at risk of extinction across the globe."

Majestic American elms were among the most popular and recognizable trees in Ontario, lining boulevards and adorning city centres. But more than 95 per cent of the population in Eastern Canada and the United States has now been wiped out by Dutch elm disease.

The imported fungal infection interferes with water transport and stops nutrients from circulating in the tree. Only about one in 100,000 elms may be naturally resistant to the pathogen.

Looking for new techniques to clone and produce resistant trees through micropropagation, the Guelph researchers selected tissue samples from survivors in Ontario, including a century-old elm tree growing on the U of G campus.

"The trees that have survived initial and subsequent epidemics potentially represent an invaluable source of potential disease resistance for future plantings and breeding programs," Saxena said.

After growing genetic copies from the shoot tips and dormant buds, the researchers hope to select germplasm with the desired traits including disease-resistance which will further aid elm breeding and biotechnology programs around the world.

They also perfected a way to conserve germplasm over the long term. A germplasm repository now contains 17 accessions collected from mature elm trees that survived across Ontario.

"Our results demonstrate the usefulness of in vitro technologies for conserving and reintroducing endangered germplasm of economic, social and environment significance," Saxena said.

In vitro conservation technology is highly efficient and better than seed banks for conservation of many plant species, he added. Hundreds of genotypes with known phenotypes can be conserved in a safe small space and can easily be propagated.

The professors worked with Guelph postdoctoral researchers Mukund Shukla and Maxwell Jones; Chunzhao Liu, Professor, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing; and Susan Gosling of the Gosling Foundation.

"We want to conserve and propagate the American elm and many other rare and endangered Canadian native species so that we can start to replace what has been decimated along the way," said Gosling.

Saxena said the team hopes to reintroduce disease-resistant trees. "The need to conserve endangered plant species in provinces such as Ontario where urban sprawl continues is crucial and urgent."

"This research has the potential to bring back the beloved American elm population to North America," said Prof. Praveen Saxena, a plant scientist who worked on the project with Professor Alan Sullivan. Both are from Guelph's Department of Plant Agriculture.

"It may also serve as a model to help propagate and preserve thousands of other endangered plant species at risk of extinction across the globe."

Majestic American elms were among the most popular and recognizable trees in Ontario, lining boulevards and adorning city centres. But more than 95 per cent of the population in Eastern Canada and the United States has now been wiped out by Dutch elm disease.

The imported fungal infection interferes with water transport and stops nutrients from circulating in the tree. Only about one in 100,000 elms may be naturally resistant to the pathogen.

Looking for new techniques to clone and produce resistant trees through micropropagation, the Guelph researchers selected tissue samples from survivors in Ontario, including a century-old elm tree growing on the U of G campus.

"The trees that have survived initial and subsequent epidemics potentially represent an invaluable source of potential disease resistance for future plantings and breeding programs," Saxena said.

After growing genetic copies from the shoot tips and dormant buds, the researchers hope to select germplasm with the desired traits including disease-resistance which will further aid elm breeding and biotechnology programs around the world.

They also perfected a way to conserve germplasm over the long term. A germplasm repository now contains 17 accessions collected from mature elm trees that survived across Ontario.

"Our results demonstrate the usefulness of in vitro technologies for conserving and reintroducing endangered germplasm of economic, social and environment significance," Saxena said.

In vitro conservation technology is highly efficient and better than seed banks for conservation of many plant species, he added. Hundreds of genotypes with known phenotypes can be conserved in a safe small space and can easily be propagated.

The professors worked with Guelph postdoctoral researchers Mukund Shukla and Maxwell Jones; Chunzhao Liu, Professor, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing; and Susan Gosling of the Gosling Foundation.

"We want to conserve and propagate the American elm and many other rare and endangered Canadian native species so that we can start to replace what has been decimated along the way," said Gosling.

Saxena said the team hopes to reintroduce disease-resistant trees. "The need to conserve endangered plant species in provinces such as Ontario where urban sprawl continues is crucial and urgent."
