The most evil prank you could pull on an iPhone user

iOS 5

By Rosa Golijan

The latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 5,?brought over 200 new features to iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch devices. And one of those features happens to allow you to pull an incredibly evil prank.

The feature is called "Shortcut" and it is essentially a simple text-expansion tool. It makes life easier by allowing an iOS user to set keywords?? referred to as shortcuts?? and phrases which they should trigger.?

For example, shortcuts could be set for "omw" to trigger "On my way!" or for "myaddress" to change to someone's full address. As you can imagine, this can spare someone the trouble of typing quite a few extra characters.

But how can you abuse this feature for evil?? albeit hilarious?? deeds?

Simple: The next time someone leaves you alone with his or her iOS device, take a moment to add a few awkward shortcuts. (You can do so by heading into the "Settings" app, tapping "General," selecting "Keyboard," and then scrolling down to the "Add New Shortcut" button.)

You can add shortcuts which will annoy grammar nuts ("than" to trigger "then," "where" to trigger "wear," and so on) or you can add ones which will trigger entire phrases and confuse your victim to no end:

The shortcut additions will appear just like regular auto-correct suggestions and will frustrate your victims until they finally realize why their iOS devices have suddenly lost their minds. (If they never figure out what the issue is, you should probably have mercy, show them where the shortcuts are and explain that they can be removed with a swipe of the finger.)
