NEW YORK (Reuters) ? When rock and roll fans flock to an outdoor music festival in upscale East Hampton next month, the pampered pooches and kitties at a neighboring animal shelter may be popping Valium to cope.

In fact, the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons is so concerned about the well-being of its 150 furry "residents" that executive director Sara Davidson also is considering noise-reducing earmuffs for the animals.

The shelter sits on 22 wooded acres flanked by an airport where the weekend-long "Music to Know Festival" is expected to draw 6,000 fans daily on August 13 and 14.

Featured artists include Ellie Goulding, the British pop singer who performed for the royal wedding of Prince William and the former Kate Middleton, as well as the Tom Tom Club and the band Vampire Weekend.

Along with the possibility of tranquilizers and earmuffs, soothing classical music will be pumped through the kennels to drown out the rock music din, Davidson said.

"The veterinarian will make the determination if any animals are reacting adversely to the sound (of the rock festival)," Davidson said.

"She will make the determination of what if any medication they need. Valium is given to animals that are experiencing nervous conditions."

The festival was originally planned for the wealthy village of Amagansett before complaints and a lawsuit caused the concert to be moved to an old runway at the East Hampton Airport, said organizer Chris Jones.

Even in its new location, the music festival has been generating complaints for months - about possible snaking traffic, blaring music and mounds of litter.

But shelter worries about the dire effect rock music will have on the dogs and cats seem a bit of a stretch, Jones said.

"The animal shelter is literally 50 yards away from the main runway at the airport," he said.

"So you literally have a G-5 engine that flies to England taking off 50 yards from the animal shelter. I don't think there's going to be noise anywhere near the animal shelter other than noise from the airplanes."

Davidson said the animals are used to the roar of jet engines but could be disturbed having to listen to rock and roll from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. two nights in a row.

"What we don't know is how the animals are going to react to amplification and the low base line," she said.

Sri Lanka rejects new war crimes charge (AFP)

COLOMBO (AFP) ? Sri Lanka's military Thursday rejected new allegations that its political bosses ordered the execution of surrendering Tamil rebels during the final days of the island's separatist war.

Reacting to a new broadcast from Britain's Channel 4 that accused defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse of ordering executions, military spokesman Ubaya Medawela dismissed the allegations as "completely false".

Channel 4 said two Sri Lankan soldiers who declined to be named had told them that orders to execute surrendering rebels came directly from the defence secretary, who is the younger brother of President Mahinda Rajapakse.

"One of these eyewitnesses, an army officer, accuses defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse of ordering Brigadier Shavendra Silva to execute Tamil rebel leaders," the report said.

Sri Lanka's then army chief, Sarath Fonseka, has been charged with inciting violence and causing racial hatred for allegedly making a similar statement implicating Rajapakse, who has vehemently denied ordering any executions.

"This (latest Channel 4 report) is completely false," Medawela told AFP. "None of the things described by Channel 4 has taken place. This latest report is aimed at strengthening their previous claims."

Channel 4 said Rajapakse himself denied the allegation.

The channel quoted a soldier as saying that the defence secretary had wanted troops "to finish the job by whatever means necessary".

"He said this was interpreted by the soldiers as a licence to kill," the broadcast said.

The UN has said there are "credible allegations" of war crimes and noted that tens of thousands of civilians perished in the final stage of the fighting in Sri Lanka.

The government in Colombo has consistently denied any war crimes happened while it crushed the Tigers, ending decades of ethnic conflict, and has also resisted calls for an international probe.

Sri Lanka's former president, Chandrika Kumaratunga, on Sunday broke ranks with her ruling party and expressed shock over last month's Channel 4 documentary, titled Sri Lanka's Killing Fields.

Sri Lankan authorities have rejected the documentary, which showed alleged executions by government troops, as fake.

The programme has been shown in many countries, including the US, Australia and India, where there are considerable Tamil communities.

NEW YORK ? The top prosecutor handling the sexual assault case against former International Monetary Fund leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn wouldn't talk Monday after the hotel maid at the center of it made the unusual move of going public with her story.

With her interviews, the 32-year-old Guinean immigrant, prosecutors' star witness, ripped off the veil of privacy that authorities had kept around her. Prosecutors have provided her with housing and paid her daily expenses to keep her from the media maelstrom.

She defied prosecutors' conventional wisdom about accusers speaking publicly before trial ? it's generally seen as providing defense lawyers material to mine for contradictions and questions. Her move could widen a rift between prosecutors and their key witness, who hasn't spoken with them since late June while her lawyer called for a special prosecutor after the district attorney's office said it had developed doubts about her trustworthiness.

Diallo's interviews could make the prospect of pursuing the case against Strauss-Kahn less attractive to prosecutors simply because defense lawyers could paint her as a publicity-seeker, said Pace Law School professor and former Manhattan assistant prosecutor Bennett L. Gershman.

Since prosecutors told a judge July 1 that Diallo's fabrications and inconsistencies had undermined the case, they have been reassessing evidence, analyzing the legal framework surrounding the case and gathering new information before an Aug. 1 court date.

The district attorney's office declined to comment Monday on Diallo's statements or its plans for the case.

For Strauss-Kahn, there's motivation to press for an answer on whether prosecutors plan to pursue the case. But defendants who think a case against them is weak sometimes agree to give prosecutors more time to investigate, on the theory that the more they learn, the more likely they might be to drop the case.

In the meantime, defense lawyers Benjamin Brafman and William W. Taylor denounced Diallo on Monday for waging "a media campaign intended to force a prosecutor to pursue charges against an innocent person."

Diallo's lawyer, Kenneth Thompson, said in a statement Sunday that Strauss-Kahn's lawyers "have conducted an unprecedented smear campaign against the victim of a violent sexual attack."

Adding details and her own voice to the basics authorities have given, Diallo said the former IMF leader grabbed and attacked her "like a crazy man" in his $3,000-a-night Manhattan hotel suite on May 14 as she implored him to stop. She said he pulled up her uniform dress and grabbed her crotch.

In the interviews, Diallo addresses some of the inconsistencies that already have rocked the case.

She testified to a grand jury that after the attack she cowered in a hallway and watched Strauss-Kahn leave, then told a supervisor. Prosecutors said earlier this month that she later told them she actually had gone on cleaning rooms before consulting her boss. Diallo told Newsweek she was disoriented and went into the rooms briefly before a supervisor appeared and asked why she was upset, but she denied changing her account.

Diallo also lied about her life story, telling prosecutors a story of being gang-raped in her homeland, they said. She told Newsweek she was raped by two soldiers but acknowledged she had embellished her life story in 2003; prosecutors have said she told them she repeated the lies to them to be consistent.

Before Sunday, Diallo's name had been reported by some French media outlets but not by major U.S. media, which generally protect the identities of people who say they've been sexually assaulted. The Associated Press does so unless the people agree to be named or identify themselves publicly, as Diallo has done.

"I will talk a lot about her fantastic recovery. Recently Amy found love with [boyfriend] Reg [Traviss]. He helped her with her problems, and Amy was looking forward to their future together. She was the happiest she has been for years. We all remember that great night at the 100 Club on Oxford Street, her voice was good, her wit and timing were perfect."

Oil hovers above $99 after US crude supply jump (AP)

SINGAPORE ? Oil prices hovered above $99 a barrel Wednesday in Asia after a report showed U.S. crude supplies unexpectedly jumped last week, suggesting demand may be weakening.

Benchmark oil for September delivery was down 19 cents to $99.40 a barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude rose 39 cents to settle at $99.59 on Tuesday.

In London, Brent crude fell 4 cents to $118.24 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

The American Petroleum Institute said late Tuesday that crude inventories rose 4.0 million barrels last week while analysts surveyed by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos., had predicted a drop of 2.3 million barrels.

Inventories of gasoline dropped 600,000 barrels last week while distillates rose 2.9 million barrels, the API said.

The Energy Department's Energy Information Administration reports its weekly supply data later Wednesday.

Investors are also closely watching negotiations among U.S. leaders to raise the government's debt limit and Europe's bid to contain its own debt crisis.

"There is no doubt that U.S. recovery to date has been extremely fragile," said Richard Soultanian of NUS Consulting. "The uncertainty created by each of these challenges, at best, could derail the nascent economic recovery and, at worst, plunge us back into recession."

In other Nymex trading in September contracts, heating oil fell 0.2 cent to $3.12 a gallon while gasoline gained 0.7 cent to $3.10 a gallon. Natural gas futures for August delivery rose 1.4 cents to $4.38 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Running club builds strength on many levels | Whidbey Crosswind

Everybody wants their kids to be physically fit and strong.

Finding programs that emphasize strength of character served up with healthy doses of encouragement and sound advice? can be more of a challenge.

That?s the prescribed regimen at Whidbey Island Running Club, a year-round team founded in 2008 by coach Catie Rodeheffer and her husband, Bill.

?It is such a privilege to be a facilitator for letting kids see that hard work produces results,? she said.

WIRC is sanctioned by USA Track and Field, and supported by North Whidbey Parks and Recreation.

The team has grown from 20 members at its inception to over 70. Members practice in groups at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels.

At least half the participants are from Navy families, said Catie, and quite a few are siblings.

Team members are encouraged to participate in a variety of running events and track and field meets. These range from low-key fun runs and ?all comers? meets all the way through regional and national Junior Olympic events.

Well-rounded training

?The things we try to emphasize ? sensible training, goal-setting, agility and strength ? these carry over successfully to many other pursuits,? Catie said. ?Running is a great springboard for all sports.?

Some of the kids do discover a passion for running. Others are there for the physical fitness aspect, and all appear to enjoy the camaraderie that results from shared group experiences.

?My favorite thing about running club is the game time on Fridays,? said Kendall Sirak, 14, referring to the more informal fitness routines and games that WIRC follows at Friday practice.

The coaches emphasize leadership skills, too. The kids take turns choosing and leading the calisthenics and strength-building exercises. Teamwork is also taught, especially when they are part of a relay team.

Rodeheffer says the youths bring a variety of goals and expectations to the club.

?I see kids, especially in the advanced group, whose goal is to make the nationals,? she said. ?These are the kids who desire to take their fitness to the next level ? that?s a goal I think is very reasonable.

?For most of the other kids, there?s a desire to keep fit. I think that?s great as well, because if the goal is to keep moving, and participating, it will help them lay a foundation to achieve a baseline of physical fitness for life,? she continued.

Some even see their social life blossom. Because of the teamwork and shared experiences, new friendships form.

WIRC members benefit from the wealth of coaching experience the Rodeheffers have compiled over the years.

?Bill has been coaching since 1983, and I started in 1985,? said Rodeheffer. ?We?ve lived in a variety of locations: Taiwan, South Dakota, and the Pacific Northwest. The common element is that we?ve coached and shared a passion for running wherever we?ve been.?

Many benefits

WIRC holds an additional advantage, one that Rodeheffer says became apparent to her only recently. A Navy family in the process of moving to San Diego, Calif., was looking for a similar club for their three children.

?She was very thankful for the experience her kids have had in our running club?s environment,? said Catie. ?Because all the clubs she?s looked at in San Diego are try-out only.?

Rodeheffer said that WIRC?s philosophy is quite different.

?If anything, I envision a fitness program that?s accessible to all kids,? she said, ?from those who are not athletic to those who desire to progress to high levels.?

Parents seem pleased with WIRC?s approach to physical conditioning for their children.

?Our daughter, Nikki, has seen her fitness level improve dramatically since joining WIRC,? said Tracey Blanchard. ?What is extra nice is that Coach Catie and Coach Bill make the training so fun for the kids.?

As if improving physical fitness, leadership skills, and general knowledge were not enough, WIRC takes on community projects as well. That is also something many parents support.

?We appreciate the training and genuine concern that has been extended to all the athletes,? said Master Chief Avionics Technician Chris Chelberg, whose daughter, Kaitlyn, competed in the 100-meter sprint at regionals.

?We also really like the fact that the club gives back to the community by performing park cleanup at Fort Nugent once a month. This community gives us so much ? it?s very important that we give back to them,? said Chelberg.

This weekend, some club members will hit the road to attend Junior Olympic Nationals in Wichita, Kan. Temperatures there have been in the 100?s, Rodeheffer noted, quite different from Whidbey Island. Obama And Boehner Speeches Barely Trend On Twitter And Facebook

WASHINGTON -- The dueling speeches Monday night by President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner may have been the talk of Washington, but on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, the usual chatter about television and celebrities remained dominant.

One of the questions that political insiders are pondering is whether the speeches will have an impact on public opinion beyond the Washington beltway. Nielsen ratings have not yet been published and public opinion polls on the speeches have not yet been conducted. In their absence, the ongoing chatter on social media sites provides a new way to assess reactions to events like Monday night?s speeches, although the measurements fall far short of the sort of nationally representative sampling that public opinion surveys typically provide.

The website Trendistic, which tracks trends in specific keywords used on Twitter, shows that mentions of "Obama," "Boehner" and "debt" spiked briefly as the two leaders were addressing the nation. And the same service shows that those keywords were also the top trending words at the end of the day. So we know that many Twitter users were talking about the speeches when they happened. But did that chatter amount to a big wave of conversation or a little splash?

The site Twendit, which ranks topics based on the amount of time listed as officially "trending" on Twitter.com, suggests that the impact was small. References to Obama, Boehner and debt (and news generally) were absent from their list of the top ten trending topics for Monday. As usual, topics were more likely to concern celebrities, television or pop culture.

But Twitter trends may not be the best way to evaluate the speeches impact. A survey conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project in May finds that just 13 percent of American internet users (or roughly 10 percent of all adults) use Twitter. Presumably, only a small fraction of those users opted to Tweet on Monday. So at best, knowing that a speech or political event is trending tells us only about a tiny percentage that are watching and talking about it online.

Potentially more interesting are the efforts to assess the conversation itself. For example, Viral Heat, a service that has partnered with The Huffington Post on election coverage, routinely conducts what they call "sentiment analysis" on topics they track on social media. They use several means to sample the conversations on Twitter, Facebook, Google Buzz and similar websites and and then perform an analysis of whether the sampled comments are positive or negative using a combination of natural language programming and machine learning.

Viral Heat found 4,775 references to President Obama between 8 p.m. EST Monday night and 11 a.m. Tuesday morning. According to their analysis, the vast majority of comments about Obama (79 percent) expressed a positive sentiment, while only 9 percent were negative. As indicated by the bar chart, which shows the level of mentions over the last seven days, mentions of Obama were only slightly higher on Monday than the rest of the previous week.

Comments about Speaker Boehner were less numerous (1,199 total mentions), somewhat less positive (54 percent) and slightly more negative (17 percent). As indicated the the bar chart, mentions of Boehner were actually higher on Thursday and Friday last week.

What do these numbers tells us? It is hard to say, especially since this sort of data is new and relatively untested, and since we know little about the political leanings of those posting comments. But the results may simply confirm what political scientists have found for years through more conventional methods: Audiences for presidential addresses tend to be dominated by those follow political news most closely, and their reactions tend to be filtered by partisanship. The fans of the president usually like what they hear, while those of the opposition party tend to express disagreement.

But whatever the nature of the reactions of those who tweeted about the speeches or posted updates about them on their Facebook pages, the relatively low volume of those comments suggest something that history would lead us to expect: Last night's speeches were probably something less than a political earthquake.

LAPD seek others possibly assaulted at stadium (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Police suspect two men charged with the severe beating of a San Francisco Giants fan at Dodger Stadium assaulted three other Giants fans at the opening day game and are asking other possible victims to come forward.

Detectives believe the other people were approached by suspects Louie Sanchez and Marvin Norwood on the west side of the stadium on March 31, a law enforcement official said Monday.

Eyewitnesses told police they saw Sanchez assault at least one of those unidentified men, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Sanchez has been charged with misdemeanor assault in connection with that incident. Detectives believe both he and Norwood were involved in the other possible assaults, but no charges have been filed.

Sanchez also is accused of misdemeanor battery on a woman at the game. The official said the woman was wearing a Giants shirt and Sanchez threw something at her during the game.

Sanchez and Norwood were charged Friday with felony mayhem and assault charges in the beating of Bryan Stow, a paramedic from Santa Cruz who remains hospitalized with a brain injury.

Sanchez, 29, and Norwood, 30, made their first court appearance Monday. Their arraignment was continued until Aug. 10.

The defendants were arrested Thursday in Rialto, about 55 miles east of Los Angeles. Their capture led to the exoneration of Giovanni Ramirez, a man police previously labeled as the prime suspect.

Court documents state that Norwood and Sanchez each inflicted great bodily injury on Stow, "causing him to become comatose due to brain injury and to suffer paralysis."

The mayhem count in the written complaint also alleged they "did cut and disable the tongue, and put out an eye," but district attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said that was legal language and that Stow had not had his eye or tongue taken out.

The case centers on incriminating statements the men have made, the official said.

Some people initially reported the suspects bragged about the incident to co-workers, though some are now backing off those statements, the official said.

Cell phone towers and photographs confirm that Norwood and Sanchez were at the game, the official said.

Attorney Gilbert Quinones, who represents Sanchez, acknowledged his client was at the stadium with his family but insisted he did not participate in the attack on Stow.

"He doesn't fit the profile of someone who would commit this type of crime," Quinones told reporters after his client appeared in court.

Quinones said he could not comment on the possibility of his client being involved in other assaults.

Norwood's public defender, Lee Rosen, made an unsuccessful request for his client's $500,000 bail to be reduced to $100,000. He did not immediately address the media.

Court documents state that police found five firearms, including an assault rifle, at Norwood's home. The document also states that Sanchez told witnesses not to provide information about the beating.

Norwood is an apprentice carpenter, and Sanchez works at a car auction house in Fontana.

The attack on Stow reverberated throughout California and the nation as police and the Dodgers, whose financial woes have also brought national attention, sought to ease fears about violence at the storied stadium.

Court records show Norwood was sentenced in 2006 to three years' probation and served 118 days in jail after pleading guilty to one felony count of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant.

In 2003, Sanchez pleaded guilty to one felony count of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, and the following year he pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of carrying a loaded firearm in a public place.

Sanchez is due back in court Aug. 1 for a bail hearing.
